New FPS Splitgate 2 faces blowback over pricey launch microtransactions

Free-to-play FPS Splitgate 2 falls to mixed Steam reviews as players criticize expensive microtransactions and the new battle royale mode.

New multiplayer FPS Splitgate 2 is facing a negative response among its player base for expensive microtransactions introduced with its full launch. The fast-paced arena shooter, which uses portals to allow quick traversal around its maps, was launched out of beta during the Summer Game Fest showcase, but has been met with criticism over its new battle royale mode and pricey cosmetics in the wake of 1047 Games co-founder Ian Proulx's on-stage appearance, where he spoke of being "tired of playing the same Call of Duty every year."

To be up-front, I really like battle royale mode isn't for me, but that's fine; it widens the potential audience. However, the reveal proved an initial sticking point after 1047 teased players ahead of its announcement that the feature was "not a campaign" and to "think bigger," leading to some feeling underwhelmed by the news.

Alongside this, Proulx's SGF presentation faced criticism for the decision to wear a 'Make FPS Great Again' hat. He may have later taken to social media claiming that it "is not a political statement, it is quite literally what it says it is, so take it at face value," but the rather tone-deaf choice of headwear has risen to the top of the Splitgate Reddit, with a post calling it "cringe as hell."

In more long-term concerns, however, players have quickly expressed frustration with the game's new microtransactions, which peak with the 'Nano Swarm bundle' priced at 8,000 Splitcoins (listed as '45% off' from an initial price of 14,550). For context, the 11,500 Splitcoin bundle is currently priced at $99.99 / £79.99, putting the discounted bundle price at the equivalent of approximately $70.

"You threw shade at Call of Duty on stage but copied Warzone's mechanics for your battle royale and dropped an $80 [sic] bundle in Splitgate 2," one writes on X. In response, the official Splitgate says, "We understand your criticism. This pack features our most unique skins with complex animations and artwork. We have a variety of cheaper options." In another response, it adds, "Monetization is always controversial, but it's also optional."

It's not all doom and gloom; several posts on the subreddit express that they're enjoying the new mode. As I mentioned earlier, I likely won't spend much time with it, but I'm certainly eager to get back to the other options. Currently, however, the game's Steam review score sits at a 'mixed' 66% rating, and it feels like the public messaging is something 1047 will have to consider its approach to moving forward. I hope it gets there; the game is a lot of fun.
