Gorgeous Wuxia-inspired open-world game Where Winds Meet gets closed beta

Taking cues from Ghost of Tsushima, gorgeous open-world game Where Winds Meet just got a brand new closed beta - and it's very, very soon.

I only really became familiar with the term 'Wuxia' ahead of playing Phantom Blade Zero at Summer Game Fest last year. Since then, however, it's one of those descriptors that sparks a little hit of dopamine. The genre's characteristic flashy, martial arts-inspired combat and over-the-top, hero-centric drama has lured me in, and I'm very much here to stay. Taking that Wuxia feel and combining it with the open-world action of Ghost of Tsushima, Where Winds Meet is one of 2025's most highly anticipated games, and you'll be able to try it soon.

China is in chaos. The Tang Dynasty is falling, giving way to the blossoming Song. The country is divided by war, its politics fractured and longtime alliances pulled taught. This is where our RPG, journeying far and wide to improve your skills, which always seems to end in a few too many drinks at the tavern.

Where Winds Meet's main selling point is its absolutely gorgeous open world. There are over 20 regions to explore, each inspired by real-life historical locations, brimming with locals to chat to and activities to complete. You can participate in the aforementioned drinking games, spend your time learning traditional Chinese instruments, or solve various puzzles – the choice is yours. There are also dynamic weather systems for each locale, giving them their own unique feel.

You'll spend most of your time out in the wilderness, however, honing your skills and taking down enemies. There are myriad close-range weapons in your arsenal, including everything from spears to knife-tipped fans, and various martial arts stances to pair them with. Acupuncture Hitting focuses on precise, anatomical strikes, for example, while the bow and arrow is the perfect ranged option if you'd rather play stealthily and strike from the shadows, disorienting and surprising your foes.

It's worth noting, however, that your actions have consequences. Choosing to spare a life might seem risky at the time, but could reap rewards further down the line, while killing a high-ranking officer will likely land you on his followers' hit lists. Make your decisions wisely: it's nice to be nice (most of the time).
